Alan W Black and Kevin A. Lenzo Speech Group at Carnegie Mellon University (site) wrote some clever software. Flite (festival-lite) is a small, fast run-time synthesis engine developed at CMU and primarily designed for small embedded machines and/or large servers. Flite is designed as an alternative synthesis engine to Festival for voices built using the FestVox suite of voice building tools.

The easy way to install using the local pack: Shutdown iPod or Reboot into apple mode Open your iPod simply like a mass storage device. Download and extract "flite-1.3-Release_iPod_bin.exe (Download)" to your iPods root path (i.e. x:\ ). Reboot into Linux (Reboot hold Rew button) edit "message.txt" to say something if you like. note the "start" file may get deleted if other software is installed. Flite will still be in the flite directory. To remove flite just delete the flite dir, demo start and message.txt files.
